The third tournament and the midway point of the Grand Chess Tour starts today and takes place at the Westin Zagreb from July 19-24. The SuperUnited Rapid & Blitz Croatia is sponsored by the Superbet Foundation and will include 9 rounds of rapid and 18 rounds of blitz chess for a total prize fund of $175,000.
The field is headlined by World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, and includes the Winner of Candidates Chess Tournament 2022 Ian Nepomniachtchi, the youngest player in the world to cross 2800 Alireza Firouzja, World No 6 Wesley So, Azerbaijan No 1 and World No 12 Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, the Winner of Grand Chess Tour Romania 2022 Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, World No 14 Leinier Dominguez, the Winner of the Tata Steel Masters 2021 Jorden van Foreest, FIDE World Champion Veselin Topalov, and European Chess Champion 2018 Ivan Saric.
The Opening Ceremony of the event took place yesterday with the 13th World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov addressing the players and guests. After the Opening Ceremony, the drawing of lots determined the pairings of the event and it will be Magnus Carlsen vs Ian Nepomniachtchi in the first round of the Grand Chess Tour Croatia!
