Magnus Carlsen today published the official statement on the controversy related to the cheating allegations against Hans Niemann. For the first time after his withdrawal from the Sinquefield Cup 2022 and resignation against Hans Niemann after only two played moves, Carlsen publicly said that he suspects Niemann was cheating more than the American admitted in the interview given during the event in Saint Louis. He added that he believes that “chess organizers and all those who care about the sanctity of the game we love should seriously consider increasing security measures and methods of cheat detection for over the board chess“.
Chris Bird, the Chief Arbiter of the Sinquefield Cup 2022 reacted to Carlsen’s withdrawal: “In my humble opinion, most organizers/arbiters will welcome any suggestions with the caveat that they must respect human decency and local laws“.
After losing to Hans Niemann in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, Magnus Carlsen decided to withdraw from the event. Reacting to speculations that overwhelmed social media, Chris Bird posted the official statement on September 10, saying that there were no indications that any player has been playing unfairly in the tournament.
