Reactions to Magnus Carlsen’s official statement

World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen today published the official statement on the recent “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy and accused Hans Niemann of cheating more than the 19-year-old American admitted publicly. He added that he believes “chess organizers and all those who care about the sanctity of the game we love should seriously consider increasing security measures and methods of cheat detection for over the board chess“, causing a reaction by Sinquefield Cup Chief Arbiter Chris Bird. Hikaru Nakamura was one of the first to react on Carlsen’s official statement saying that it seems that Carlsen thinks Hans was cheating in the game they played at the Sinquefield Cup despite what was said by the organizers, chief arbiter, and fair-play specialist Kenneth Regan.

See more reactions below:

Magnus finally states he believes Hans has cheated, but there are many questions still hanging in the air. It's mystifying why he needs Hans to give him permission to say more after dropping bombs on the young man's head. Will the full truth ever come out? Sad time for chess… https://t.co/UrNysZp7bR

okay but can you be clearer https://t.co/h5CbSAgQll

give magnus credit for having the balls to talk about an issue the chess community wanted to pretend doesnt exist https://t.co/HJzrQMk5Oc

I’m happy Magnus made a statement for the general public who has not obsessively parsed every interview/tweet on #chessdrama

As one who has, there’s only one thing that surprises: how high Magnus’s concern is, weeks later, over cheating in their own Sinquefield cup encounter. https://t.co/29GbrnjCvs

Well he's come out and said it. That's good in some respects, but this doesn't feel any closer to resolution. Will other players join what is now effectively a boycott?

— Malcolm Pein (@TelegraphChess) September 26, 2022

Pretty sure that Niemann will never play a game of chess against Carlsen again. That kinda limits his opportunities in top tournaments.

They should do a tsa body scan before a match to check for anal beads

— MrBeast (@MrBeast) September 26, 2022

“without explicit permission from Niemann to speak openly” is the most interesting detail in this statement.

It’s widely known at this point that Hans lied about his cheating history. Magnus is baiting Hans to show his hand, and I believe Hans will stay quiet for a long time https://t.co/xwXf5W5Zi7

So, at last, there is some clarity: #Carlsen's opinion and feeling is that #Niemann is a bad guy and, after trying twice, Magnus decided to never play in the same tournament with Hans anymore.
It's OK more or less. E.g. as I hope NOBODY can be forced to play v Karjakin or Shipov.

— Douglas Griffin (@dgriffinchess) September 26, 2022

If I was utterly convinced a player at my chess club was cheating, I wouldn't want to play him/her.

If I was a professional playing matches for money and my reputation, I DEFINITELY wouldn't play him/her.

That's my prerogative.

As a professor of Logic I can say one thing. Magnus' statement and thinking has a logical fallacy petition principii (begging the question). He is taking hypotheses as if they were proven facts and drawing conclusions from hypothesis.#chesspunks https://t.co/ZFmDojQLBe
