The 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann has been in the limelight for the last couple of weeks. After Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, the World Chess Champion decided to withdraw from the event . Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias and the “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy is the top news in mass medias ever since. After weeks of silence, Magnus Carlsen published the official statement on the case saying that he believes Niemann cheated more – and more recently – than he has publicly admitted.
А few days аго FM Yosha Iglesias published а video with “the most incriminating evidence against Hans Niemann”. She analyzed Niemann’s over-the-board games concluding that the US player had 100% score in ten games and 90+% score in twenty-three other games played in the last three years. Comparing score to other grandmasters, Yosha pointed that a former 2800+ player told her he played only one 100%, one 97% and a few 85% games in his life. Many pointed out that Yosha’s calculation based on Kenneth Regan’s ROI was false, but she claims that it doesn’t change the main argument that Hans played ten 100% scores and the incredible 5 tournaments run.
Yosha Iglesia’s video attracted lots of attention and GM Hikaru Nakamura commented on her conclusions during his live stream: “Shout out to Yosha for making this! “. Reviewing the complete video that tends to prove Niemann’s play was extraordinary in the last three years, Hikaru Nakamura tried the Chessbase tool Yosha used for analysis. Checking two games against Andrey Esipenko that he won, Hikaru Nakamura found out that he scored “only” 80% and 61%. Hikaru then checked one of the games he considered to be one of the best in his all life, and realized he scored 66% according to the Chessbase analysis. See the complete video below
And while many consider Yosha Iglesia’s analysis to be solid against Hans Niemann, others remind us that Hans Niemann is innocent until proven guilty . GM Daniel King commented on the recent happenings saying that it seems to have been forgotten that a 19-year-old has been thrown to the lions , while GM Raymond Keene explained Niemann could now raise stakes by consulting M’Learned Friends.
