WGM Shahenda Wafa wins 2022 African Individuals Ladies Championship

WGM Shahenda Wafa of Egypt did well when she won the 2022 African Individuals Ladies Championship in Lagos, Nigeria. She amassed 7 points out of the nine rounds to go home with USD 3,000. Her only loss was to Toritemuwa Ofowino of Nigeria in round seven. 
WGM Shahenda Wafa has now won the event three times (2017 & 2018 and 2022).  
Interesting, her elder sister WGM Shrook Wafa has won the crown four times (2013, 2014, 2016, and 2019) ).
WIM Charlize Van Zyl of South Africa and Bridget Micahel of Nigeria were in joint second place with 6.5 points each. However, WIM Charlize Van Zyl got the silver medal as she had a superior tie-break, while Bridget Michael got the bronze.  Both players went home with USD 1,500 each.

WFM Luzia Pires of Angola came in fourth with 6 points, narrowly missed the medals, but went home with USD 750. 
Second seed WIM Caxita Seperanca of Angola finished with 5 points to end up in a disappointing 12th place.
Esther Ayemou Mazan, aged 14, of Ivory Coast, did well to score 5 points and ended up in 13th place.
Sinchie Ayemou Akissi of Ivory Coast, who is nine years was the youngest competitor in the event. She scored two points and ended up 27th in the ranking.
Twenty-eight players from 14 African federations took part. The event ran from 18th to 27th September 2022 at the Orchid Hotel in Lagos.
The Egyptian trio of GM Amin Bassem, GM Adly Ahmed and GM Hesham Abdelrahman swept all the three medals on offer in the Open Section.
Egypt has dominated the African Individuals Ladies’ Championship, winning 10 of the 15 editions.
