European Chess Club Cup 2022 – Round 3 report

Three rounds have been already played at the 37th European Chess Club Cup and the 26th European Women’s Club Cup in Mayrhofen, Austria with six teams in the Open section and two teams in the Women’s section emerging on the top with the perfect score of 6 match points.

With no major upsets, most of the favorites scored in the third round of the Open tournament. Silla – Valencia Origin of Chess, Offerpill Chess Club, Schachclub Viernheim 1934e.V., Novy Bor Chess Club, CSU ASE Superbet and Tajfun SK Ljubljana scored comfortable victories in the third round to be in the co-lead of the event.

It seemed that Vugar Gashimov might surprise the top seeded CSU ASE Superbet as 20 years old Kirill Schevchenko defeated Richard Rapport on the second board, while Rauf Mamedov drew against Viswanathan Anand. However, Deac Bogdan-Daniel, Gukesh D and Lupulescu Constantin scored important victories for the team bringing the overall 4-2 victory.

After scoring 1.5 points in the first two rounds, Magnus Carlsen rested yesterday and his Offerspill Chess Club scored the 4-2 victory against Schachgesellschaft Riehen. Hansen Eric and Christiansen Johan-Sebastian won their games on the second and third board, while the other games finished with draws.

The fourth round of the event starts at 14:00 CEST and brings interesting encounters of the leaders. CSU ASE Superbet will go against Schachclub Viernheim 1934e.V., Offerspill Chess Club plays Novy Bor Chess Club, and Silla – Valencia Origin of Chess will play against Tajfun – SK Ljubljana.

CSU ASE Superbet scored an important narrow victory against Odlar Yurdu in the Women’s section. Bulmaga Irina and Atalik Ekaterina drew their games against Mammadzada Gunay and Mammadova Gulnar (respectively), while Saduakassova Dinara and Efroimski Marsel scored full points having black pieces against Fataliyeva Ulviyya and Balajayeva Khanim.

Meanwhile, the third seeds ASVOe Pamhagen defeated the top-seeded Cercle d’Echecs de Monte-Carlo. With Danielian Elina and Osmak Yulia drawing against Muzychuk Anna and Cramling Pia, Ushenina Anna and Maltsevskaya Aleksandra were the heroes of the Austrian club as they defeated Stefanova Antoaneta and Paehtz Elisabeth for the overall 3-1 victory.

The fourth round of the Women’s tournament will see a clash of the leaders with CSU ASE Superbet vs ASVOe Pamhagen on the top board.

Live broadcast of the games can be followed through chess24.com on the following link together with commentaries by GM Peter Svidler, GM Laurent Fressinet and IM Lawrence Trent.
