After 19-year-old American grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen in the third round of the Sinquefield Cup 2022, the World Chess Champion decided to withdraw from the event . Rumors that Magnus Carlsen suspected Niemann was cheating started spreading over social medias and the “Carlsen – Niemann” controversy is the top news in mass medias ever since. Hans Niemann confessed cheating online in random games on chess.com, but he claimed that he never cheated over-the-board. Chess.com removed Niemann from the platform, explaining their decision with the official statement , and announced to publish their findings on the Carlsen – Niemann case . The Wall Street Journal exclusively published the results of chess.com’s investigation on the Carlsen – Niemann case, and chess.com a few hours later published the complete 72-page report which claims that Niemann cheated in more than 100 online games.
A detailed report which includes the screenshots of confidential conversations between chess.com Chief Chess Officer Danny Rensch and Hans Niemann caused different reactions on social medias. While some state that chess.com statement is a strong evidence that Niemann cheated more than he confessed, the others are waiting for proofs that Niemann cheated over-the-board. GM Noel Studer shared his thoughts on the case saying it’s insane that chess.com knew Hans likely cheated over 100 times and would have let him play in CGC – Chess.com Global Chess Championship : “Chess.com knew Hans very likely cheated over 100 times and would have let him play in the global championship were it not for Magnus. That’s insane! Online cheating by GM’s would be heavily discouraged if namedropping was at least a minor risk. At the end of the day clean players are cheated, not the platform. We need to hold chesscom accountable to keep online chess clean. What’s the risk of being caught at the moment? 1-year ban that nobody knows about and 10 next tries if you say “I promise I won’t do it again”. Also letting cheaters get a new profile in order to advertise their classes, like in the dlugy case, is horrible imo. This again takes away ANY risk. Dlugy got paid to write articles on improving blitz in NewInChess magazine for years. That’s just one example of probably many “. See the tweets below
