Erica Muturi & Robert Mcligeyo win Kenya Junior Championship

Erica Muturi & Robert Mcligeyo are the 2022 Kenya National Junior Chess Championship winners.  The event ran concurrently with the 2022 Mombasa Open at the Mombasa Continental Resort from 8th to 10th October 2022.
13-year-old Erica Muturi, seeded 7th at the start, played well to emerge winner of the Ladies’ Section with five points. Mercy Ingado, Elizabeth Cassidy and Laurecia Atiagaga all obtained five points, but Erica Muturi had a superior tie-break.
Erica Muturi is a Thika Road Christian School student and is the 2022 Kenya National Schools Champion U15.
Robert Mcligeyo, on the other hand, was dominant in the Open Section with a clear win with six points out of six rounds. CM Aguda Lwanga was second with 5.5 points. Timothy Mwabu, Cyprian Mbaabu, Joel Odhiambo and Dhruv Shah were in joint third place with five points.
Robert Mcligeyo is one of Kenya’s top junior players and has represented the country in the 2022 Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India.  He is seventeen years old and a student of Rusinga School, in Nairobi.
Erica Muturi and Robert Mcligeyo will now represent Kenya at the Africa Junior Chess Championship, which runs from 12th to 20th November 2022 in the port city of Bejaia in Algeria.
The Africa Junior Chess Championship is one of the continent’s longest-running events. The event’s first edition took place in 1980, and this year’s edition will be the 35th one.
The last time Kenya participated in the Africa Junior Chess Championship was in 2018 edition held in Entebbe, Uganda.
