The 4th edition of the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid & Blitz, India’s biggest chess tournament, kicked off on Monday with the Rapid tournament in Kolkata. The event featured a very strong line-up with an interesting mixture of world-class grandmasters and Indian young chess stars.
Indian prodigy Nihal Sarin clinched gold with a round to spare as he scored impressive 6.5/8 points. Sarin lost the last-round game to his compatriot Arjun Erigaisi, but kept the sole first place on the top of the rankings.
Arjun Erigaisi scored 6 points for a clear second place as a group of five players trailed by 1.5 points: Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, Hikaru Nakamura, Gukesh D, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Nodirbek Abdusattorov.
