Kenya National Chess Championship begins today
The prestigious Kenya National Chess Championship begins today up until the 30th of December 2022 at the Charter Hall in Nairobi, Kenya.
Participants will compete in the open and ladies’ sections in the annual national chess championship. In addition, Chess Kenya has included the PWD Open and PWD Ladies section reiterating their commitment to making chess inclusive.
25-year-old WFM Sasha Mongeli has been tipped to walk away with the women’s title. Mongelli has been the most consistent player this year.
She will have to outperform former Kenya National Ladies Champions Gwen Jumba (2018) and WCM Lucy Wanjiru (2019).
For the third year running the Chess Kenya Federation will offer the winner of the Open section a car! The hotly contested event will most likely see the former Kenya National Champions taking part for top honors. These include 2018 Dr. Victor Ng’ani (2018), Mehul Gohil (2019), and Martin Njoroge (2021).
The top 24 players will then proceed to the second phase to select the team for the 2023 African Games. The event takes place in Accra, Ghana, from the 4th to the 19th of August, 2023.
