The African Chess Confederation is being represented by Kenya, Zambia and Zimbabwe at the FIDE Olympiad for People with Disabilities.
The first-ever Chess Olympiad is being hosted in Belgrade from the 29th of January to the 5th of February 2023.
Zambia {19} which is being represented by Aaron Banda, Robert Nkhupi, Tambuzhai Kadilamwando and Natasha Sauti is the highest-ranked African team. They are followed by Kenya {22} which has Chomu Miheso, Sheikh Sadam, Wong Wambalo and Mary Nduku.
Zimbabwe {23} which has Onai Chikafu, Tapiwa Gora, Tichaona Machona and Kissmore Basopo is the lowest-ranked African nation in the tournament.
After round one of the competition, only two African player Tapiwa Gora and Tichaona Machona all from Zimbabwe has managed to record victories. Gora defeated Tomas Jankunas whilst Machona outsmarted Philip Gardner who is representing the International Chess Committee of the Deaf (ICCD).
Round two begins today with Zambia hoping to record their first victory against Venezuela whilst Kenya host Montenegro. Zimbabwe will be hoping to continue with their impressive form when they meet Serbia 2.
