Three months before the start of the 44th Chess Olympiad 2022, the compositions of Indian teams have been announced. Two teams in each Open and Women’s section will represent India in Chennai from July 28 to August 10. The All India Chess Federation (AICF) assigned former world champion Viswanathan Anand and the chess legend Boris Gelfand as Indian teams mentors to ensure that the players will get the best possible preparation.
Gelfand gave an extensive interview to TOI (Times of India) journalist Prasad Ramasubramanian, expressing his excitement about the role with the Indian team: “I am quite happy to be playing a part in helping the squad with its preparations for such a big event. I have had the privilege of playing with many of the Indian players who have been named in the teams and it will be great to interact with them once again“.
Being asked about the expectations, Gelfand added that he strongly believes that Indian teams can go the distance in the competition: “The Indian squad has a good mix of youth and experience. Along with teams such as the United States and China, India will be among the favourites for a podium finish. It will all boil down to how one holds his or her nerve on that given day“.
The full interview with Boris Gelfand can be found here.
