The President of the African Chess Confederation, Tshepiso Lopang has paid tribute to Angolan chess legend IM Manuel Mateus.
Mateus passed away on Tuesday 05 March 2024 in Malange where he was receiving medical treatment. He made history by becoming the first Angolan to obtain an IM title after he emerged as the African Chess Champion in 1987.
‘IM Manuel Mateus has a prominent place in the incredible story of all chess fairy tales’, ACC Tshepiso Lopang says.
Lopang paid tribute to Mateus describing the Angolan legend as ‘simply immense’.
The Angolan Great died at the age of 57.
‘It is with great shock and deep sadness that I send you this message, after learning of the tragic death of Angolan chess legend IM Manuel Mateus.
On behalf of the African chess family and the African Chess Confederation Executive Committee, I wish to extend my deepest condolences, to everyone at Federaco Angolana de Xadrez, Zone 4.3,and most importantly the family of IM Manuel Mateus, his friends, and loved ones.
As the first Angolan to attain the IM title after emerging as the African Champion in 1987, Mateus played a pivotal role in the growth and development of chess in Angola and the region.
