South Africa’s Jesse February is the only unbeaten player in the women’s section after round four whilst Zambia’s IM Mwali Chitumbo and Africa’s number one GM Amin Bassem are untrodden in the open section at the African Individual Chess Championship in Accra, Ghana.
February started off the championship with a victory against Madagascar’s Aina Mahasambatra Tsinjoviniavo and outshined Maud Benson of Ghana before outplaying and ending Wafa Shahenda’s unbeaten ran in the third round.
Two unbeaten players Nassr Lina of Algeria and WIM February faced each other in the 4th round and again February ended Lina’s unbeaten ran.
In the open section, GM Amin Bassem recorded a victory against Nigeria’s Adeyinka Samuel Adewole, IM Amorim Agnelo and Uganda’s FM Harold Wanyama in the first, second and third rounds respectively. Whilst Zambia’s IM Mwali Chitumbo has cruised past CM Daniel Smart, Donaldo Silva and FM Rongwane Gomolemo.
Heading into the 4th round GM Bassem, IM Fy Antenaina Rakotomaharo, IM Silva David, GM Bellahcene Bilei and IM Mwali Chitumbo enjoyed an unbeaten ran. Bassem ended IM Fy Antenaina on the other hand IM Mwali outweighed his counterpart IM Andrew Kayonde whilst IM Silva played a draw with GM Bilei.
Players have a rest day today and the 5th round is scheduled for Sunday 17 March 2024.
