2021 African Schools Individual Chess Championship gets underway

Preparations for the 2021 African Schools Individual Chess Championship that are due to take place in Nairobi this week enter their final stages. The players representing Kenya have now moved into residential training at Pride Inn Azure Hotel, Nairobi.
The rigorous selection process started with regional qualifiers before the top players met at Makini School for the finals. The two-day AISCC qualifiers brought 70 junior chess players from Nairobi, Nyanza, Central, Western, Rift Valley and Coast regions.
The players battled for tickets in the Under 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 categories, with only the top two players in both boys’ and girls’ sections qualifying for the continental showpiece.
The event starts on 12th December and runs to 17th December 2021 at the Pride Inn Azure Hotel, Nairobi.
South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania, Botswana, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia, Algeria and Egypt are some countries that have confirmed participation.
The finalists will report to camp on Monday to prepare for the AISCC finals.
Kenya has had reasonable success at the past editions of the African Schools Individual Chess Championships.
The brochure of the event can be downloaded here.
