2022 Chennai Olympiad – Round 10

Round ten of the 2022 Chennai Olympiad was a successful one for Kenya. The Open team dismissed Timor Leste 3.5-0.5 while the Ladies crushed Guatemala 3-1.

The Open team is currently in the 110th position out of 186 teams, while the Ladies are ranked 62nd out of 161 teams.
The other big news for Kenya was that Martin Njoroge has earned a conditional FM title, which crystallises when he crossed the 2100 rating.
Ben Nguku and Robert Mcligeyo also earned conditional CM titles, which will crystallise when they cross the 2000 rating.

Somalia went down 4-0 to Cyprus, while Madagascar crushed Ghana 4-0.
Tanzania held Saudi Arabia to a 2-2 draw while Uganda lost 3-1 to Finland.

The biggest upset of the day was when GM Dommaraju Gukesh of India lost in a dramatic game on board one to GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan.  The loss enabled Uzbekistan to snatch a draw against India B and stay at the top going into the last and final 11th round. The video below captures the final dramatic moments.
“The most craziest comeback I’ve ever seen,” says ?? GM Arturs Nieksans.

Uzbekistan now faces the Netherlands while 2nd place Armenia takes on Spain. India B will take on the formidable German team.

Kazakhstan collapsed 0.5-3.5 to the Indian team, while Poland held Georgia to a 2-2 draw.
Steamrolling WIM Oliwia Kiolbasa, of Poland who has been having a fantastic event with nine wins from 9 rounds, only managed a draw this time against IM Lela Javakhishvili of Georgia. She is the only Olympiad player with 9.5 points from ten rounds.
India now faces the USA while Ukraine takes on Poland. India’s victory will undoubtedly mean that they will clinch the gold medal.
