Jan Karsten & WIM Lina Nassr win 2022 African Junior Championship

Jan Karsten of South Africa and WIM Lina Nassr of Algeria are the winners of the 2022 African Junior Chess Championship, which ended yesterday at the Algerian port city of Bejaia.
Jan Karsten scored 6.5 points out of nine rounds to lift his maiden African Junior title.  Hewins an IM title (at 2200 Elo), a GM norm and qualifies to participate in the 2023 World Junior Chess Championship.
CM Mohamed Taleb Abedrrahim of Mauritania scored 6.5 points but had a lower tie-break to grab the silver medal.
IM Lamine Brahami of Algeria, the defending Champion, was third with 5.5 points. His countryman Abdeljalil Bidi and Kenyan star Robert Mcligeyo Oluka also scored 5.5 points to end in fourth and fifth place in the standing. Robert Mcligeyo Oluka earned an impressive 67 Elo points from the events taking his rating to 1853.
CM Lutumia Amaro and FM Junior Domingos, both of Angola, scored five points despite missing the first two rounds.
A total of 16 players from eight African federations took part.


WIM Lina Nassr of Algeria retained her title with an impressive 8.5 points out of nine rounds. WFM Junior Ednasia of Angola was second with 7.5 points, and Chahrazed Djerroud of Algeria grabbed third place with 6 points.
WIM Lina Nassr wins a GM norm and qualifies to participate in the 2023 World Junior Chess Championship.
Mercy Ingado of Kenya scored two points.
A total of 12 players from four African federations participated in the event.
