During the official opening ceremony of the African Individual Chess Championship, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich announced that the chess torch lit will be landing in Accra, Ghana in a few days
The FIDE Chess Torch was first introduced at the Chess Olympiad in Chennai in 2022, symbolizing the enduring spirit of the game. The torch will be coming to Accra as part of of its tour across the globe, serving as a beacon of inspiration for chess enthusiasts everywhere. It is also part of FIDE’s centennial celebration and the torch will pass through several continents to finish in Budapest, the host city of the 45th Chess Olympiad.
President Dvorkovich alongside the President of the African Chess Confederation Tshepiso Lopang made the first ceremonial move at the African Individual Chess Championship which started on Wednesday 13 March 2023.
