12-year-old Deborah Ebimobo-Ere Quickpen ended Jesse February’s unbeaten run at the African Individual Chess Championship in an exciting round seven fixture on Monday 18 March 2024.
WIM Jesse February hadn’t lost six classical games straight, but yesterday her impressive streak came to an end. She lost the game to 12-year-old Deborah Ebimobo-Ere, who is the reigning Nigeria Chess Champion.
Another major upset was on board two in the women’s section when Uganda’s Peninah Nakabo defeated championship top seed WGM Shahenda Wafa a result that has seen both of them tied on position two just one point behind February.
Angola’s Ednasia Junior recorded her third defeat in the tournament after she lost against WIM Lina Nassr. Junior counterpart Jemima Paulo also recorded her 4th victory when she defeated Zimbabwe’s Linda Shaba.
The South African affair between Boshoma and Laubscher ended in a draw.
In the open section, GM Amin outsmarted Zimbabwe’s Jemusse Zhembe while GM Bilel earned an impressive victory over IM Chitumbo Mwali. Zambia’s IM Kayonde shined over Uganda’s FM Harold Wanyama.
Nigeria claimed the West African title when FM Bomo defeated Prince Akpa of Ghana.
