Egypt’s Jana Mohamed has ended her country’s 10-year wait for a women’s title at the African Junior Chess Championship, clinching the 2025 crown in Cape Verde with a composed and unbeaten run.

The 2025 African Individual Chess Championship bronze medalist scored 7½ points from nine rounds, registering six wins and three draws to finish clear of the field.

Her victory makes her the first Egyptian woman to win the junior continental title since WGM Shahenda Wafa in 2015.

Uganda’s Kayyar Sana secured silver, while Kenya’s Zuri Kaloki took bronze.

Behind them, a group of five playersNatalie Banda of Botswana, Jemima Paulo, Taiane Antonio both from Angola, São Tomé Príncipe’s Ariette Almeida, and Algeria’s Ryma Nassr ended on 5½ points apiece in a congested chase for the podium.

Mohamed’s triumph restores Egypt’s presence in junior women’s chess, reaffirming the country’s long-standing tradition of producing top continental talents.
