In FIDE Zonal competitions, host nations have traditionally performed well, and the 2025 Zone 4.2 West Africa Chess Championship was no exception, with host nation Nigeria claiming four of the six medals available in the prestigious zonal chess tournament.

This year’s championship saw a remarkable gathering of forty-two chess stars from eight Zone 4.2 countries, with Abdulrahman Akintoye, the reigning champion, rising to the challenge and securing his title for the second time in a row with 7 ½ points out of 9.

Toritsemuwa Ofowino’s remarkable prowess in the women’s section earns her a well-deserved second consecutive Zone 4.2 championship title, bringing her total zonal championship titles to four.

Abdulrahman and Toritsemuwa’s victory in the zonal competition means that Nigeria retains the Zone 4.2 Championship titles for the second year running. Additionally, they have earned places to represent their zone at the upcoming African Chess Confederation Super Zonal Chess Championship.
