EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMERS AT THE 2024 AFRICAN SCHOOLS INDIVIDUAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2024 African Schools Individual Chess Championship concluded on December 20, 2024, with the host country, Ghana, leading the medal tally.

Ghana garnered a total of 14 medals, including four gold, seven silver, and two bronze medals, thus emerging as the overall champions of the ASICC 2024.

Kenya finished in second place with five medals, comprising four gold and one bronze, whereas Zimbabwe, with two medals, one gold and one silver, secured third place.

Aziz Matthew Luke secured Gambia’s only medal at the championship, winning a gold medal in the U-17 category with an impressive score of 8.5 points out of nine rounds, remaining undefeated throughout the tournament.

Alipo Namangale, a rising Malawian chess star, also earned his country’s sole medal in the championship, capturing a bronze medal in the Under 9 section.

The chess players, including Pence Gene of Kenya, Xing Li from Zimbabwe, and Jedidiah Acheampong of Ghana, earned conditional Candidate Master titles, and Ridham of Ghana and Annabel Makanga of Kenya acquired conditional Woman Candidate Master titles, all winning gold medals in their age categories.

Additionally, Kimeli Prudence from Kenya received a conditional Woman FIDE Master title, and Matthew Aziz from Gambia and Dave Acheampong of Ghana earned conditional FIDE Master titles.
