Accra, Ghana – Women’s chess took center stage on August 30, 2025, as Mindsport Ghana, in partnership with the Ghana Chess Association, FIDE Women’s Commission, and the Africa Chess Confederation, hosted the inspiring “Rising Queens” event. The celebration highlighted the achievements, resilience, and growing influence of women in chess while bringing together players, officials, and supporters for a day filled with competition, recognition, and networking.
The event combined rapid chess tournaments, personal journey-sharing sessions, and an awards ceremony that honored individuals whose dedication has shaped the women’s game in Ghana.
Honoring the Queens of Ghana Chess
A key highlight of the program was the presentation of appreciation awards to nineteen outstanding women players and contributors recognized as the Queens of Ghana Chess. Among them were International Arbiter Ashley Christiana Naa Merley, Woman FIDE Master Dr. Angela Naa Amerley Ayiku, Woman Candidate Master Tobi Felix Abena, and Woman Candidate Master Maud Benson Esi. Rising stars, including Pearl Addo, Keziah George, and Audrey Ayiku, were also celebrated for their growing impact on the sport.
In addition, recognition was given to parents who have been pillars of support for their daughters’ chess journeys. Honorees included Mrs. Adutwumwaah Sarkodee Adoo, Mrs. Regina Richardson, and Ms. Dimple Gupta.
The event also paid tribute to gentlemen who have actively supported women’s chess in Ghana, with acknowledgments going to Air Commodore George Arko Dadzie, Mr. Ameku Philip Elikem, and Mr. John Kojo Hasford, among others.
Chess Tournaments Showcase Talent
The competitive spirit of the day was on full display during the rapid chess tournaments. In the Open Rapid section, Jeshurun Tandon claimed first place, ahead of CM Daniel Smart Frimpong in second and Miracle Morris in third. WCM Maud Benson emerged as the Best Lady in the open category.
The Women’s Section saw IA Christiana Naa Merley Ashley take top honors, followed by WFM Dr. Angela Amerley Ayiku in second place and Pearl Addo in third.
Distinguished Guests and Supporters
The “Rising Queens” celebration was graced by dignitaries from Ghana’s sporting landscape, including National Sports Authority (NSA) Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Deputy Director General Veronica Commey, and NSA Chief Operations Officer Mr. Gyamfi. Representatives from the Ghana Olympic Committee and senior chess players also lent their support, alongside corporate partner Ocean Spray.
The Ghana Olympic Committee, National Sports Authority, and Ocean Spray were acknowledged for their critical contributions, alongside individuals such as Air Commodore Arko Dadzie, Ms. Keziah George, and Mr. Harry Sarkodee Adoo.

The success of the event was made possible by the dedication of its organizers and technical team, including Clinton Fomevor, George Acheampong, Isaac Boakye, Ethel Cofie, and Vitus Amenorpe.
