Toritsemuwa Ofowino, Nigeria’s chess sensation, claimed her second consecutive and fourth Zone 4.2 West Africa Chess Championship title on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, in Lagos, Nigeria.

Living up to expectations as the top seed, Ofowino amassed eight out of a possible nine points, securing seven victories and two draws against WCM Emmanuela Esther Ayemou Mazan and Michelle Nwankwo in rounds four and five, respectively.

Azumi Suleiman, a 23-year-old Nigerian, also delivered an impressive performance as the second-seeded player, earning 7½ points with seven victories, one draw, and one defeat to Toritsemuwa, thereby securing the silver medal.

Ivorian chess whiz Emmanuela Esther Ayemou, aged 17, was among the select few who maintained a perfect unbeaten record throughout the championship, securing seven points from five wins and four draws. As the sixth seed, she drew with the eventual champion Toritsemuwa, second-seeded Azumi Suleiman, third-seeded Michelle Nwankwo, and fourth-seeded Bridget Michael.

Only twelve players participated in the women’s section.
