With her impressive win, Chahrazed Djerround becomes the second Algerian chess player and fifth African player to achieve the remarkable feat of securing the African Junior Chess Championship title multiple times.

Algerian chess prodigy Chahrazed Djerround has etched her name in the history books by becoming the 5th player to secure the African Junior Chess Championship title multiple times.

This remarkable achievement was attained on Saturday, 23 November 2024, in Cairo, Egypt.

Djerround’s second championship title is a culmination of her dedication and skill, having previously emerged victorious in 2023 in Mauritania.

Since the introduction of the girls’ competition in 2002, five players have demonstrated exceptional prowess by winning multiple championship titles. Mona Khaled (2005 and 2009), Melissa Greeff (2006 and 2008), Esperanca Caxita (2013, 2014 and 2016), Lina Nassr (2017,2021 and 2022), and now Chahrazed Djerround (2003 and 2004).

Algeria’s reign over the girls’ championship, unbroken since 2021, has piqued interest in which country will ultimately put an end to this dominance.
